Nigeria Police pay N1M compensation on the spot after crashing civilian's car

A Nigerian civilian, Temi Tope Samson, has narrated how police officers allegedly paid him N1 million on the spot after an officer crashed his car during a controversial highway arrest in Ogun State.

Samson, who was travelling from Lagos to Ondo State, said he was stopped at a checkpoint in Ogun and accused of failing to stop for their superior at an earlier checkpoint. He explained that he unknowingly passed the previous checkpoint due to early morning fog.

Despite his defence, the officers allegedly demanded a fine of N500,000 or threatened to take him to their station. While en route to the station, an officer who took control of his vehicle crashed it in an accident.

In an attempt to settle the situation, the officers reportedly negotiated and paid him N1 million to repair the damages.

However, Samson claimed he was coerced into accepting the settlement and later discovered upon arrival in Ondo State that the accident had affected his car’s engine.
