Nigerian Navy apprehends Six suspected crude oil thieves

ABUJA, April 24, 2025 – In a decisive crackdown, the Nigerian Navy captured six suspected crude oil thieves during coordinated operations from April 20 to April 22, 2025.

Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, the Director of Naval Information, confirmed this achievement in a Thursday statement.

These efforts formed part of  “Operation Delta Sanity”, a sustained campaign against oil theft and illegal refining in Nigeria’s waterways.

Firstly, on April 20, the Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH intercepted four pipeline vandals near Renaissance Africa Energy Pipeline in Bayelsa State.

This operation marked the beginning of an intensified crackdown on illegal oil activities across the region.

Next, on April 21, the Forward Operating Base ESCRAVOS uncovered and dismantled two illegal refinery sites in Delta State.

During this operation, authorities found two refining ovens and ten dugout pits filled with stolen crude oil.

In another related operation, the Nigerian Navy Ship SOROH seized two vehicles loaded with sacks of illegally refined products.

This significant confiscation underscored the Navy’s dedicated efforts to disrupt illegal oil trade networks in the region.

Moreover, on April 22, the Naval Outpost ONITSHA arrested armed suspects attempting to attack the SEEPCO oil facility in Anambra State.

This swift action demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s oil facilities from threats and criminal activities.

Investigations linked these individuals to a previous attack that resulted in the deaths of three soldiers in June 2024.

Furthermore, the Nigerian Navy Ship DELTA raided and deactivated two more illegal refinery sites in Warri South-West.

These sites contained nine dugout pits, along with sacks and drums of stolen crude oil and illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

Commodore Adams-Aliu stressed that these operations underscored the Navy’s determination to eliminate maritime crime.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, has mandated these efforts to protect Nigeria’s oil-dependent economy.

By conducting these operations, the Nigerian Navy reaffirmed its commitment to securing the nation’s maritime domain.

Moreover, the Navy continues to collaborate with other security agencies to ensure lasting peace and stability.

These actions highlight both the persistent threat of oil theft and the unwavering resolve to combat it.

Through sustained vigilance, the Navy aims to safeguard Nigeria’s critical economic resources for future generations.
