Nine Internet Fraudsters Convicted in Benin City: EFCC

Benin City, Nigeria – In a major breakthrough against cybercrime, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of nine internet fraudsters.
The agency announced this victory in a press release on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on April 11, 2025.
This ruling marks a significant step in Nigeria’s fight against financial crimes.

Between March 27 and April 11, 2025, the EFCC’s Benin Zonal Directorate successfully prosecuted the offenders before Justice A.N. Erhabor.
The convicted individuals include Desmond Aghanenu, Okolie Bright, Emeka Matthew, Anikwushe Calin, Precious Onyeka Okonkwo, Ojie Victor Emeka, Safety Tamarakuro Austin, Promise Osas Lucky, and Ebi Ferguson.
Each faced separate charges related to fraud and document forgery.
The charges ranged from obtaining money under false pretenses to possessing fraudulent documents.
For instance, Desmond Aghanenu was accused of retaining incriminating files, violating the Advance Fee Fraud Act.
After thorough investigations, all nine defendants admitted guilt in court.
The prosecution, led by F.A Jirbo and his team, pushed for immediate sentencing.
Meanwhile, the defense lawyers pleaded for leniency, citing their clients’ remorse.
Justice Erhabor handed down two-year prison terms or a ₦200,000 fine to eight convicts.
However, Ebi Ferguson received a stricter three-year sentence.
Additionally, the court ordered the forfeiture of their electronic devices and bank balances to the government.
This conviction resulted from a well-coordinated EFCC operation targeting cybercriminals in Benin City.
Intelligence reports had linked the defendants to fraudulent online schemes.
By dismantling this network, the EFCC reaffirmed its dedication to protecting Nigeria’s digital economy.
The ruling also serves as a strong warning to other fraudsters.
Furthermore, the case highlights the importance of public cooperation in combating cybercrime.
The EFCC encourages citizens to report suspicious activities promptly.
With continued vigilance and robust enforcement, Nigeria can reduce internet fraud and restore confidence in online transactions.
This successful prosecution demonstrates the power of collaboration between law enforcement and the judiciary.
Ultimately, the sentencing reinforces the consequences of financial crimes.
As the EFCC intensifies its crackdown, more convictions are expected.
This progress signifies hope for a safer digital future, where fraudsters face justice, and victims receive restitution.
The fight against cybercrime remains a top priority for Nigeria’s economic security.
