“Not All Are Dibia”: Ugezu Warns Against Fake Traditionalists, Cultists

Renowned filmmaker and cultural advocate Ugezu J. Ugezu has issued a strong warning to the public, urging caution in identifying true traditionalists, especially within the Igbo spiritual context. In a passionate post shared online, Ugezu declared that anyone who is capable of taking another’s life—directly or indirectly—cannot be a Dibia, the sacred title reserved for those connected to the ancestral deity, Aja Ani.

According to Ugezu, true traditionalists live by spiritual principles that strictly prohibit violence, including murder or conspiracy to harm others. “A traditionalist cannot kill another,” he emphasized. “Whatever he cannot handle, he leaves for Chi Ukwu.”

He further explained that the power of a Dibia comes from a deep spiritual connection to Aja Ani, and such individuals would never engage in acts that defile that connection. He warned that many people currently parading themselves as Dibia are in fact cultists or ritualists who lack any sacred link to the divine.

“A cultist is a ritual idiot who is not connected to any Aja Ani,” Ugezu stated bluntly. “Be careful, brethren.”

The cultural icon expressed concern that many of these pretenders have infiltrated both spiritual and religious spaces, misleading unsuspecting followers and casting a dark shadow over true African spirituality.

Ugezu’s call comes at a time when there is growing public discourse around indigenous practices and the urgent need for discernment.

“Be guided. One Love,” he concluded.
