Obi Criticises Nigerian Government Over Empty Booths at TICAD9

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has faulted the Nigerian government over the absence of activity at the country’s booths during the ongoing Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Japan.

In a statement on Tuesday, Obi described the empty booths as a diplomatic embarrassment and a reflection of what he called the government’s “empty promises” to Nigerians over the past two years.

He argued that the defence reportedly offered by officials—that the government opted for “strategic engagements”—was another example of excuses that fail to address citizens’ suffering.

“The empty booths at TICAD are not just about a diplomatic embarrassment, they are a clear symbol of the hollow promises and empty governance that our citizens have endured,” Obi said.

He stressed that the incident mirrored the struggles of millions of Nigerians facing unfulfilled expectations, while urging for better governance and renewed commitment to national progress.
