….Calls for investments in education, Job creation to uplift labour force
As Nigeria joins the rest of the world in commemorating International Workers’ Day, former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has extended warm commendations to Nigerian workers for their steadfast commitment and invaluable contributions to national development.
In a statement issued to mark the occasion, Obi hailed the resilience and hard work of Nigerian workers across all sectors—public and private—despite the prevailing economic and political challenges. He noted that their legitimate labours remain the driving force of the nation’s engine.
“Today offers us the opportunity to appreciate every Nigerian worker—at different levels of government, across agencies, private industries, and business sectors. Your legitimate labours form the energy that propels our nation,” Obi stated.
Highlighting the stark realities facing workers in the country, Obi drew attention to the disturbing employment figures, saying, “Despite recent reconfigurations of our economic indices, Nigeria’s unemployment and underemployment rate stands at over 35%, with youth unemployment and underemployment soaring above 45%, one of the highest in the world. These alarming figures fuel various forms of criminality and social vices.”
Obi reiterated his long-standing position that aggressive investment in the nation’s productive population is the surest route to economic revival. According to him, this transformation can only be achieved through targeted investments in education, healthcare, job creation, and support for small businesses.
“As a nation, we must create an environment that fosters growth, provides opportunities, and ensures fair compensation. We must recognise the dignity of labour and promote a culture of respect and appreciation for all workers,” he said.
Reaffirming his commitment to shifting Nigeria’s economy from consumption to production, Obi stressed the need to build a society that rewards productivity, integrity, and honest labour.
“As we celebrate today, let us continue to work together towards a brighter future, where every worker can thrive, and where their talents and skills are matched by opportunities,” Obi concluded.
