Joseph Aremo, the Chairman of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC), announced the chairmanship election results.
Conducted across 18 local government areas on January 18, the election concluded with significant outcomes.
During his announcement at the commission’s headquarters in Akure, Aremo revealed that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) won 16 out of 18 positions.
This victory underscores the party’s stronghold in the state’s political landscape.
The electoral officer noted that a rescheduled election is pending in Ondo West Local Government Area.
Meanwhile, results from Owo Local Government Area are still awaited, adding to the anticipation surrounding the elections.
Only twelve political parties participated in the Saturday elections.
Notably, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) withdrew from the process, citing doubts about the commission’s ability to ensure a fair election.
The parties that contested included Action Alliance, Action Democratic Party, Action People’s Party, and others.
This diverse array reflects the competitive nature of the electoral landscape in Ondo State.
The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has voiced disappointment over the low voter turnout during Saturday’s local government elections.
ODIEC Chairman, Joseph Aremo described the turnout as “unencouraging” and called on political parties to intensify efforts to sensitize the electorate ahead of future polls.
Aremo, who monitored elections in Akure South, Akure North, and Ifedore local government areas, revealed that ODIEC had taken proactive steps to ensure the timely delivery of both sensitive and non-sensitive materials.
Despite the commission’s preparedness, the voter participation fell short of expectations.
Meanwhile, the state’s Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Afolabi, praised the peaceful conduct of voters in the Akure metropolis during the election.
Observers noted that the enthusiasm among voters was palpable, indicating a growing interest in local governance.
The previous council election took place on August 23, 2020, with terms expiring on August 22, 2023.
Since then, civil servants have managed the governance of the state’s 18 council regions, ensuring continuity during the transition.
After several delays, the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) successfully scheduled the elections for January 18, 2025.
This marks a pivotal moment for the state as it moves forward in its electoral journey.
Looking ahead, political analysts predict that the outcome will shape the future of governance in Ondo State.
The results may also influence party dynamics, potentially leading to shifts in alliances and strategies among the competing factions.
