Omokri: “Peter Obi’s Absence at WAFCON Final Aided Super Falcons’ Victory”

In a bold reaction to Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 win over hosts Morocco at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final on July 26, former presidential aide and political commentator Reno Omokri has attributed part of the Super Falcons’ success to the absence of Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, at the match.
Omokri argued on X (formerly Twitter) that Obi’s attendance at the WAFCON final would have proved a distraction—just as Omokri claims happened previously during a disappointing 1-1 draw between the Super Eagles and Zimbabwe in March, which he says was influenced by Obi’s presence at the stadium in Uyo.
“Thank God Peter Obi did not attend the WAFCON final. That is how he would have distracted the Super Falcons, like he did to the Super Eagles during the World Cup qualifying match at Uyo,”** Omokri posted.
In addition, Omokri questioned Obi’s track record in sports development during his tenure as Governor of Anambra State. He pointed out that Obi never built a stadium capable of hosting FIFA matches during his eight years in office, contrasting this with his current interest in attending high-profile matches.
“A man who could not build a World Class stadium capable of hosting a FIFA match in Anambra for eight years wanting to go to a stadium built by Godswill Akpabio… If he really loved sports, why did he not show it when he was Governor?”** Omokri asked.
Omokri escalated his criticism beyond sports, describing Obi as inconsistent on other national issues, including his stance on education policy:
“A fellow who could not build even a nursery school in his two terms as Governor is now advising the Federal Government about Dentistry students at various universities. What a contradiction!”
Despite Omokri’s political jabs, his praise for the Super Falcons remained clear and resolute:
“A big congratulations to the Super Falcons for winning the 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco… This win lifts the national mood and projects the indomitable winning spirit of the Nigerian people.”
As Nigeria celebrates its triumphant return to WAFCON glory after a seven-year hiatus since 2018, Omokri’s commentary has sparked both support and backlash online. Critics argue his comments politicize a landmark sports victory, while supporters see his remarks as a reminder of the politicians’ optics.
