PDP convention deadline extended as 2027 battle lines tighten

(DDM) – The National Convention Organizing Committee (NCOC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced an extension of the deadline for the submission of completed Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms by aspirants seeking to contest for various offices at the Party’s forthcoming elective national convention.

The convention, billed for November 15th and 16th, 2025 in Ibadan, Oyo State, is expected to draw thousands of delegates and observers as the main opposition party repositions itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the earlier deadline of Friday, September 26th, 2025 has now been shifted by the NCOC to allow more aspirants ample opportunity to complete their paperwork and ensure wider participation in the democratic process.

In addition to the extension, the Committee also announced a change in the date for the Screening of Aspirants, which was previously fixed for Tuesday, September 30th, 2025. The new screening date will be communicated to aspirants in due course.

The PDP leadership explained that the adjustment was “necessitated by the need to ensure all necessary arrangements are put in place for the smooth conduct of the exercise,” stressing that transparency and inclusivity remain the hallmark of the party’s internal democracy.

Hon. Debo Ologunagba, Secretary of the NCOC Publicity Sub-Committee, who signed the official statement, assured members and aspirants that the new timetable would be designed to give every contestant a fair chance.

He urged aspirants to remain focused and continue mobilizing their supporters across the country while awaiting the new schedule.

The PDP’s national convention is regarded as a decisive event where new national officers are elected to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.

Analysts say the Ibadan convention will be particularly significant, as it comes at a time when the PDP is seeking to rebuild after its defeat in the 2023 presidential elections.

Party insiders revealed that several top political figures are vying for strategic positions such as the National Chairman, National Secretary, and Publicity Secretary.

The extension of deadlines, they said, is likely to benefit aspirants from states where internal consultations are still ongoing.

Civil society organizations monitoring party primaries also welcomed the move. A senior fellow at the Centre for Democratic Development noted that the decision reflects “a willingness by the PDP to put inclusivity above rigid deadlines,” adding that such flexibility could strengthen internal cohesion.

Delegates and grassroots members of the PDP in Oyo State have already begun preparations to host what they described as “a convention that could redefine the future of the party.”

Hoteliers in Ibadan say bookings are rising ahead of the event, which is expected to bring in economic benefits to the state capital.

As the countdown to November begins, the PDP leadership has urged all members to remain united, emphasizing that the ultimate goal is to reclaim power at the national level in 2027.
