PDP opens doors for Peter Obi return, says 2027 game changer DDM News

(DDM) – A prominent Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, Chief Dan Ulasi, has declared that the opposition party is ready to welcome Peter Obi back into its fold ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Ulasi, a respected political voice in the South-East, said Obi’s nationwide popularity and credibility could dramatically transform PDP’s fortunes.
According to him, the former Anambra State governor has built a reputation that commands trust across Nigeria, making him a valuable force for any political platform.
He insisted that Obi’s grassroots appeal and mass following could guarantee at least 40 percent of votes nationwide if he aligns with a major party like PDP.
Ulasi noted that the “Obidient Movement,” which arose during the 2023 election, shattered Nigeria’s traditional two-party dominance and created a new wave of political consciousness among the youth.
He argued that Obi’s entry into PDP would energize its base, attract undecided voters, and give the party a fighting chance against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.
The PDP stalwart emphasized that the question of Obi’s future platform remains uncertain, as he ran under the Labour Party in 2023 but was previously a PDP member.
He explained that the decision lies with Obi himself, but that PDP remains open to reconciliation and collaboration in the larger interest of Nigerians seeking alternative leadership.
Obi’s shifting political journey
Peter Obi has had a complex political trajectory in Nigeria’s democracy.
He first gained prominence as governor of Anambra State under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), before later joining the PDP.
In 2019, he was Atiku Abubakar’s running mate in the PDP presidential ticket, further cementing his national profile.
However, in 2022, dissatisfied with internal PDP politics, Obi defected to the Labour Party, where he ran as the party’s presidential candidate in 2023.
The election saw him win across major urban centers and the South-East, disrupting the PDP-APC dominance and giving Labour its best performance in Nigerian history.
Although the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Bola Ahmed Tinubu of APC winner, Obi’s strong performance sparked ongoing debates about Nigeria’s shifting political map.
The Obidient factor in 2027
Ulasi noted that the Obidient Movement remains the strongest grassroots political force in Nigeria today.
Driven largely by young people, urban professionals, and diaspora Nigerians, the movement has proven its staying power beyond the 2023 election.
Analysts believe that whoever controls this movement, whether Labour, PDP, or a coalition, will shape the outcome of the 2027 presidential race.
According to Ulasi, PDP cannot afford to ignore Obi’s popularity or dismiss the force he represents.
He said building alliances with Obi could prevent vote splitting that would hand APC another easy victory.
What it means for PDP and Nigeria
PDP, Nigeria’s main opposition party since 2015, has struggled with internal divisions, defections, and weak messaging.
The return of a figure like Obi, Ulasi argued, could inject new life into the party’s structure and rebuild public confidence.
Observers, however, caution that merging Obi’s grassroots movement with PDP’s old political establishment would come with challenges of trust, power-sharing, and credibility.
Yet, the prospect of Obi rejoining PDP is already generating heated political discussions across Nigeria, with many speculating on how it could reshape alliances ahead of 2027.
For now, Obi has not announced his next political move, keeping both supporters and rivals guessing.
But what is clear is that his decision will significantly influence Nigeria’s political direction in the next election cycle.
