Peter Obi, Rhodes-Vivour meet Afenifere faction, restate 2027 ambition DDM News

(DDM) – Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has continued his nationwide consultations ahead of the 2027 race.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that Obi, alongside Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour and Obidient Movement coordinator Tanko Yunusa, met with a faction of the Yoruba socio-political organisation Afenifere in Lagos.
The visit, held at the group’s Lagos office on Tuesday, was described as both a courtesy call and a strategic political consultation.
Obi was warmly received by factional leaders, including Oba Oladipo Olaitan, Chief Supo Shonibare, and former Lagos State Deputy Governor, Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele.
Other prominent figures present included Chief Sola Ebiseni, Prince Justice Faloye, Dele Farotimi, Bashorun Segun Sanni, Alade Rotimi-John, and Deputy Secretary-General.
In a statement jointly signed by Oba Olaitan and Prince Faloye, the faction thanked Obi for honouring the group and reaffirmed its commitment to progressive ideals.
The meeting, which lasted until about 4 p.m., featured wide-ranging discussions on Nigeria’s future, democratic challenges, and economic hardships.
Obi reportedly expressed deep gratitude to Afenifere for backing his 2023 campaign and for remaining “a consistent voice for good governance.”
He restated his commitment to restructuring, equitable governance, and the socio-economic priorities Afenifere has championed for decades.
These include education reform, healthcare access, rural development, and policies aimed at achieving full employment.
Obi further emphasised that Nigeria’s rising cost of governance, insecurity, and suppression of opposition voices were obstacles to progress.
He told Afenifere leaders that his 2027 presidential bid would centre on unity, fairness, justice, and policies to reduce Nigeria’s economic burden.
Afenifere, in response, praised Obi for aligning with its long-standing values of egalitarianism and equity.
The group voiced concern about what it called the shrinking democratic space and the harassment of political opposition.
It also warned that threats to true democracy remain an existential danger to Nigeria’s stability.
Afenifere urged Nigerians to keep alive the torch of democracy lit by the country’s founding fathers.
The leaders reassured Obi of their continued partnership, stressing that his values resonate with the vision of a fairer Nigeria.
The meeting ended with promises of more consultations and collaborations between Afenifere and Obi’s political movement.
Analysts note that the Lagos meeting signals Obi’s intention to deepen alliances across regions ahead of 2027.
They also observe that Rhodes-Vivour’s presence underscores the Labour Party’s strategy to consolidate its Lagos and Southwest support base.
Political watchers believe Obi’s sustained outreach reflects his determination to remain a formidable challenger in Nigeria’s political arena.
