Police arrest mother on night of childbirth after protesting aunt's plan to sell her baby

A Nigerian mother was arrested by police on the night she gave birth after confronting her aunt, who allegedly took her baby to sell.

This was revealed in a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a lawyer who had visited a correctional facility to offer free legal aid to inmates. During his visit, he encountered a 21-year-old woman who shared her ordeal.

According to the lawyer, the woman had become pregnant, but the child’s father was poisoned and died while she was expecting.

A certain aunt in her neighborhood offered to care for her but later suggested she sell the unborn child. The woman refused.

On the day she gave birth, the same aunt allegedly negotiated the sale of the newborn right in her presence. After the baby was delivered, the aunt took the child and left the new mother behind.

Although weak from childbirth, the woman later went to the aunt’s house to demand her baby. Still bleeding from delivery, she protested against the alleged abduction.

However, the aunt reported her to the police, leading to her arrest that same night.

She was held at a police station for a week despite her fragile condition before being remanded in a correctional facility.

The lawyer, who is now representing her pro bono, stated that the woman has no idea where her child is or what has happened to the baby.

As the post gained traction online, concerned individuals flooded the comment section, expressing their outrage and demanding justice.

@Esquireo: “In all of this, all fingers point to the Police Force and its transactional nature of highest bidder. Such as sorry country we live in Uncle Dele Farotimi is not wrong afterall.”

@Macaveli1248969: “I am praying for those who are wrongly in these correctional centers. That God will send them help like this, and that he will give me finance to support courses like this. I also pray that he will visit the sins of this police people from the father to their fourth generation.”

@Mickyiv4: “The members of this MIB are the deadliest criminal organization in Nigeria. Their minds are as black as their uniforms. The only word to describe them is plain evil. You have a higher survival rate with designated criminals than those guys. This is crazy.”
