Political Tensions Escalate in Rivers State as Lawmakers Clash with Governor Fubara

The political landscape in Rivers State has become increasingly volatile as lawmakers aligned with former governor Nyesom Wike clash with Governor Siminalayi Fubara over key governance issues. A faction of the state assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, has issued a fresh 72-hour ultimatum to the leadership of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), demanding an explanation for the funding of the October 5, 2024, local government elections without legislative approval. The lawmakers also accused Governor Fubara of violating the 1999 Constitution by refusing to re-submit the 2025 budget and appointing commissioners they claim are illegitimate.

Speaker Amaewhule warned of potential constitutional actions against Fubara, emphasizing that their demands had been formally communicated without response. Meanwhile, tensions have escalated with the involvement of religious leaders, as a group of Muslim clerics, Concerned Muslim Imams, cautioned against any attempt to impeach the governor. They warned that such moves could destabilize the state, leading to violence and economic instability.

Despite mounting pressure, Governor Fubara remains steadfast, asserting that he has the people’s support and remains committed to good governance. Speaking at the inauguration of a fire service sub-station, he reassured citizens that his administration prioritizes their welfare and security. The situation in Rivers State highlights a deepening political rift, with lawmakers challenging the governor’s authority while religious leaders warn of dire consequences should the crisis escalate further.
