President Tinubu To Host Super Falcons Today After WAFCON Victory

There are indications that Pres­ident Bola Tinubu will host the Super Falcons and officials of Nigeria’s women’s national foot­ball team at the Presidential Villa today. ­

This became feasible as the Nigerian team were expected to land in Abuja on Sunday night after their return from Morocco.

The team pulled off a stunning comeback victo­ry over the host nation in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final to carry the day.

The Falcons, trailing by two goals at one point, fought back bravely to de­feat the Atlas Lionesses 3-2 in a thrilling contest.

The trophy marks Nige­ria’s 10th WAFCON title.

President Tinubu had earlier called the team to congratulate them on their victory, and approved the payment of their long-over­due bonuses and allowanc­es just before the final.

Sources close to the presidency believes the players and officials will receive generous rewards from the president in rec­ognition of their heroic ef­forts and their success in bringing home yet another continental title.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has been in high spirit since the Super Falcons won the 2024 Wom­en’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Commending the team, Tinubu said that have lifted our spirits. “You are a pride to your generation and we are all very happy,” Tinubu stated.

The 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) marks the nation’s record 10th continental title.

In a post-match video call with team captain Ra­sheedat Ajibade, players, and officials, the president expressed his pride and eagerness to welcome the team and trophy back home in Abuja.

The president later ex­pressed his joy in a state­ment issued by Special Ad­viser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, saying, “I am very, very proud of you. The entire nation is proud of you. You have lifted our spirits. You are a pride to your gener­ation and we are all very happy”.

Tinubu equally congrat­ulated the coaching staff, team management, minis­ters, and officials involved in the victory, promising the team a grand celebra­tion.

“I just spoke with our Super Falcons.

“On behalf of all Nigeri­ans—at home, in Morocco, and around the world—I told them how proud we are. They have lifted our spirits with their bril­liance, resilience, and uni­ty.

“We are very, very happy. I look forward to welcom­ing them home.”
