Prince Memorial High School, Onitsha Holds Maiden Students’ Forum, Unveils Students’ Anthem

The maiden students’ forum of Prince Memorial High School, Onitsha has ended with a call on parents to work hand in hand with the school for the optimum success of the students.

The event, themed: “Bringing Back Morals into the School System”, was graced by parents, government officials, members of Omagba Phases I and II Landlords Association, Old Boys and Girls of the school was held at the school premises.

In his opening remark, the Chairman of the occasion, Chief Francis Udeoba, who is also the PTA Chairman of the school commended the parents and other guests for coming and urged all to be ready to implement the lessons from the event.

Welcoming the guests, the Principal, Prince Memorial High School, Onitsha, Dr. Mrs Amaka Ubaka thanked the Chairman, Post Primary Schools Service Commission, PPSSC, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu and the Board Members for introducing Students’ Forum in the State School System as a way of fostering academic excellence, leadership and community engagement.

Highlighting the major achievements of the school in recent times, Dr. Ubaka noted that Prince Memorial High School, Onitsha has done very well in creativity and technovation, adding that the school’s maiden Innovatech & Entrepreneurial Exhibition Fair held in November, 2024 with the theme: “Tech for Change: Empowering the Next Generation” brought the students’ creative talents and technological innovation to the limelight.

She stated that the school represented Anambra State in a Science Exhibition Competition at Abuja in August 2024, and was also part of Anambra Innovation Week, 2024, clinching the 3rd position in the Quiz Competition.

Dr. Ubaka noted that the school has succeeded in extending free water supply to Omagba Community on Mondays through their small scale water scheme project, adding that the free education policy of Governor Soludo with the beautiful and serene environment of the school has led to population explosion in the school, hence the urgent need for more buildings and halls to accommodate the students.

Presenting a paper on “Bringing Back Morals into Our School System”, Dr. Amaka Ubaka described morals as the principles, values and standards that guide an individual’s behaviour and decision making such as honesty, respect, responsibility, compassion and fairness among others.

She opined that moral values are essential in character development, positive relationships, academic integrity, social responsibility and future leadership, while reiterating the need for teachers, parents, community and school to join hands to inculcate strong moral values in the children.

Other paper presenters were the School Guidance Counselor, Mrs Ifeyinwa Obikwue who spoke on “Cultism & Get-Rich-Quick Syndrome”, and the Vice Principal, Administration, Mrs Gloria Nwokeabia who spoke on “Indiscipline among Students and its Effects”.

In their separate remarks, the Counsellor representing Ward 8 in Onitsha North Area Council, Hon. Emeka Okwuosa and the the Chairman, Landlords Association, Omagba Phase I, Chief Dominic Onyejekwe observed that the teachers and parents must work in synergy to bring out the best in the students, while urging students to maximise the academic and moral trainings being offered to them in the school to become functional citizens.

Highlights of the event were the unveiling of the Students’ Anthem, debating, cultural dance and mime drama.
