Real Madrid suffers huge injury scare ahead of Atletico Madrid second leg

Real Madrid could be without key defender Antonio Rudiger for their upcoming matches, as the German centre-back is dealing with illness and a knee issue. His absence from training this week raises doubts about his availability for both Sunday’s league match against Rayo Vallecano and next week’s crucial Champions League second leg against Atletico Madrid.
Rudiger has been one of the few Madrid defenders to avoid serious injuries this season, though he did miss four games last month due to a muscle problem. He made a strong comeback, helping Madrid secure important European wins over Manchester City and Atletico. However, his current health concerns put his participation in doubt as Madrid looks to defend their narrow 2-1 aggregate lead in the Champions League last-16 tie.
Manager Carlo Ancelotti declined to provide a clear update on Rudiger’s condition in his pre-match press conference but confirmed that Federico Valverde remains available. The Uruguayan midfielder played through pain in the first leg against Atletico and is expected to feature again this weekend. Ancelotti praised Valverde’s versatility, stating, “He’s the best midfielder in the world, the best full-back… but his future is in midfield.”
In Rudiger’s likely absence, David Alaba is expected to partner Raul Asencio in defense against Rayo. However, Alaba is still recovering from a serious ACL injury, and it remains uncertain whether he will be fit enough to start against Atletico just three days later.
