Roy Keane lost for words at what he saw Altay Bayindir do vs Newcastle

It’s a sorry state for Manchester United that they’re being forced to choose between two goalkeepers arguably not fit to wear the shirt.

In Altay Bayindir’s defence, the backup shotstopper was hardly helped by a backline that radiated anxiety and played a starring role in the visitors’ second-half collapse against Newcastle.

That said, the 26-year-old did himself absolutely no favours with an atrocious out ball from within his own box that saw Bruno Guimaraes score the Magpies’ fourth goal to hammer the nail in the coffin.

The Red Devils are next in action against Lyon in the return leg of their Europa League quarter-final clash against Lyon on Thursday night.

Here’s hoping for an improvement on a pretty weak-willed display in the northeast.

The Turk’s second-half error certainly didn’t go unnoticed in the Sky Sports studio post-match.

Roy Keane questioned the 26-year-old’s rationale for playing a ‘risky’ pass that was ultimately intercepted by Joelinton.

“I go back to the decision-making and I’m not sure what the big benefit [is] – it’s too risky!” the Irishman told Sky Sports.

Keane went on to add: “I’m quick to defend goalkeepers when they first come into the team because I think it does take five, six, seven games to get up to speed with the shots, whatever.

“That basic mistake there is just… honestly, I can’t understand it because this is top level, big boy stuff. They’re up at Newcastle, Newcastle are flying, you do your homework on who you’re playing and when they’re pressing you.

“If you’re gonna go long or you’re gonna chip it, make sure you go too far, so then it’s at least off the pitch. You can argue afterwards, but if you lose it there, someone’s in on goal on top of you.”

Sofascore handed Bayindir the worst rating (5.5/10) on the pitch for a display that saw the goalkeeper provide an error that directly contributed to a Newcastle goal on Sunday.

Will Andre Onana return in goal on Thursday?

We’re not so sure that our No.1 did enough to prove that he deserves to keep hold of his starting berth ahead of Thursday night’s Europa League clash.

Having said that, it’s not like Andre Onana is by far and out the superior alternative; we’re just comparing bad apples at this stage and hoping for the best.

To be fair to the former Fenerbahce ‘keeper, he has performed reasonably well in two European outings, picking up an average rating of 7.4/10 to the Cameroonian’s 6.9/10 (Sofascore).

But ultimately, it’s not a big enough pool of data to justify Altay Bayindir’s selection over that of his fellow goalkeeper at Manchester United.
