Shock as Boxing Legend Ricky Hatton Dies at 46

Former British world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has died at the age of 46, shocking fans and the sporting community worldwide.
Hatton, who won world titles at both light-welterweight and welterweight, was discovered dead at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester, early on Sunday morning of September 14, 2025.
Police confirmed they were called to his residence at 6:45 a.m. after a member of the public raised concerns.
Officers said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesperson said: “Officers attended an address on Bowlacre Road, Hyde, where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”
Hatton was one of Britain’s most popular fighters of the modern era.
Known for his fearless, high-pressure style, he captured world titles and fought some of the sport’s biggest names, including Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao.
His fan base, famously rowdy and loyal, followed him around the world, creating an atmosphere unmatched in British boxing history.
Nicknamed “The Hitman,” Hatton retired with 45 wins from 48 fights but was open about his struggles with mental health after leaving the ring.
In recent years, he had become an advocate for mental health awareness, encouraging athletes and ordinary people alike to seek help when struggling.
Just this past July, Hatton surprised fans by announcing plans for a professional return in December against Eisa Al Dah in Dubai.
The boxing community reacted with disbelief and sadness. Heavyweight champion Tyson Fury wrote on Instagram: “RIP to the legend Ricky Hatton. There will only ever be one Ricky Hatton. Can’t believe this so young.”
Former world champion Amir Khan described him as a “mentor, warrior and one of Britain’s greatest boxers.” In an emotional post on X, Khan added:
“Sometimes the hardest fight happens in silence, in the mind. Mental health isn’t weakness it’s part of being human. Ricky, thank you for your grit and glory.”
Matchroom Boxing, one of Britain’s biggest promoters, also paid tribute: “We are saddened to hear the news of Ricky Hatton’s passing.
Our thoughts and condolences are with Ricky’s family and friends at this tragic time. There’s only one Ricky Hatton.”
Hatton’s legacy stretches beyond his titles. For fans, he represented working-class Manchester pride, a fighter who never forgot his roots and always gave everything in the ring.
His passing leaves a void not only in boxing but also in the hearts of millions who grew up chanting his name.
At just 46, Hatton’s death is a painful reminder of the struggles many athletes face after their careers end. As tributes pour in, the boxing world mourns a champion, a fighter, and above all, a man who was loved by his fans.
