SMBLF Warns APC and INEC Against Undermining Opposition, Stresses Democracy Needs Plurality

The Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF) has issued a strong warning to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging them to refrain from underhanded tactics that could stifle opposition parties and erode Nigeria’s democratic foundation.

In a joint statement endorsed by prominent figures—including Oba Olaitan Ladipo (Afenifere), Senator John Azuta-Mbata (Ohanaeze Ndigbo), Ambassador Godknows Igali (PANDEF), and Dr. Pogu Bitrus (Middle Belt Forum)—SMBLF emphasized that democracy thrives on pluralism, not dominance. The group cautioned against any form of intimidation, inducement, or infiltration designed to weaken opposition voices.

They additionally urged INEC to uphold its role as a neutral and credible umpire, calling for strengthened mechanisms to resolve internal party disputes, adherence to real-time transmission of election results, and an overt reaffirmation of impartiality.

SMBLF also expressed concern over internal divisions and factional crises within opposition parties, warning that such instability fuels political monopoly and undermines accountability. The statement urged opposition actors to set aside personal rivalries and collaborate for the nation’s democratic well-being.

Reactions from key political groups were swift and supportive. The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) described the SMBLF’s call as timely and essential, noting that a functioning opposition is integral to democracy. Labour Party officials echoed the message, asserting that the APC should not ignore its role in exacerbating fractures within the opposition, and warned against judicial manipulation that threatens party integrity.

Similarly, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar called on opposition parties to unite and rebuild credibility to reclaim democratic leadership, particularly ahead of the critical 2027 general elections.

At press time, neither the APC nor INEC had issued a response to the SMBLF’s appeal.
