Spain Mulls Boycott of 2026 World Cup If Israel Qualifies

Spanish government officials have warned that the national football team may withdraw from the 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel is allowed to compete, citing concerns over recent events in Gaza.

Patxi López, spokesperson for the Spanish Socialist Party, made the remarks amid growing pressure for Spain to take symbolic stands in international sports. Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has also called for Israel’s exclusion from some global competitions, comparing the situation to Russia’s suspension after its invasion of Ukraine.

Israel is currently third in its UEFA qualifying group, with an eye toward securing a playoff spot. If Israel qualifies, Spain’s government suggests it could refuse to participate in protest. (foot-africa.com)

Officials said their move is meant to push FIFA and UEFA to act in line with what they describe as international norms for accountability and human rights. Neither FIFA nor the Spanish Football Federation has officially responded to the proposed boycott.
