Stam reveals why Man Utd could avert from signing Jeremie Frimpong

Jaap Stam tells Manchester United to go after Jeremie Frimpong, but fears they might decide to drop their interest in the wingback for a curious reason.

The 24-year-old started his career at Manchester City but never made it to the first team. Instead, he was poached by Celtic after impressing Neil Lennon. The Northern Irish manager was full of praise for the Dutchman’s ‘brilliant’ form’ time at Celtic Park.

The wingback then signed for Bayer Leverkusen in January 2021 and has been a stalwart at the club ever since. Frimpong was considered one of the pillars of last season’s undefeated side which went on to dominate the German landscape under the guidance of Xabi Alonso.

The Netherlands international continues to earn himself more suitors with his superb displays down the right flank. German journalist Cristian Falk revealed in his latest column for The Daily Brifieng that Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been in contact with the player lately as he looks to sway him towards Anfield Road.

Nevertheless, Frimpong has also been on Man Utd’s radar, and Stam considers him the ideal fit for Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system.

“Jeremie Frimpong can play as a right-wing back having also played as a right winger and a right back,” said the legendary Man Utd defender when discussing his compatriot in an interview with Makthavare.se.

“He has pace and is very direct and can score goals as well as create chances for his team-mates. I think he would be a very interesting player for Manchester United to look at, he would fit the style of play on the right-hand side.”

Nevertheless, Stam suggests the Red Devils might no longer be keen to sign Dutch players after buying plenty during Erik ten Hag’s tenure at the club, and most of them falling below the mark.

“The only issue might be if the club don’t want to continue bringing in Dutch players going forward. But he has a lot of quality and is doing so well in a tough division in Germany, I think he would be a great fit for the system at United.”

Man Utd brought in the likes of Mathijs de Ligt, Tyrella Malacia and Wout Weghorst to appease their former manager, in addition to some of his old Ajax pupils like Antony, Andre Onana, Lisandro Martinez and Noussair Mazraoui.
