Tell Nigerians How Ibas Managed Rivers Resources During Emergency Rule – Adegboruwa to Tinubu

Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa has asked President Bola Tinubu to make public how retired Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas managed Rivers State funds during his six-month tenure as sole administrator.

Adegboruwa spoke on Thursday, September 18, during an interview on Channels Television’s Morning Brief.

He stressed that Rivers State is among Nigeria’s wealthiest states, and residents deserve to know how their resources were used.

In March 2025, President Tinubu swore in Ibas as sole administrator of Rivers following political instability in the state.

For six months, he governed without an elected governor or state assembly.

Adegboruwa argued that accountability demands a full report on Ibas’ stewardship. He said:

“Rivers is one of the richest states in Nigeria. Somebody acted for six months as a single individual. What is his report? What did he do with the resources? What is the state of the handover? Nigerians are entitled to know.”

The lawyer cited Section 305 of the Constitution, which guides emergency rule.

He maintained that both the President and the National Assembly must provide a detailed report on how much revenue Rivers received during the period and how it was spent.

He added that transparency is crucial for future governance.

Without it, citizens may lose faith in the emergency rule process.

Civil society groups have echoed similar demands. Recently, Comrade Epelle, another activist, insisted that Admiral Ibas must account for all funds handled under his watch.

The call for accountability comes as political activities resume in Rivers after Tinubu lifted the emergency.

Many residents remain concerned about transparency, especially with the state’s vast oil and gas revenues.

Adegboruwa stressed that the people deserve clear answers from Tinubu and federal lawmakers.

He warned that silence would only fuel suspicion and weaken trust in democratic institutions.

This demand adds to growing debates on how federal interventions are managed during state crises.

Analysts say a transparent audit of Rivers’ resources will set a precedent for future emergency administrations.

As Rivers transitions back to elected governance, questions on financial management remain central.

Nigerians now await Tinubu’s response to these calls for accountability.
