The side of love no one talks about, by Jacob Iroko |

Imagine you’ve had a long, exhausting day, and all you want is to come home to a little support—maybe your partner has tidied up, made dinner, or simply offers a warm hug and a listening ear. But instead, you walk in to find dishes piled in the sink, your partner glued to their phone, and zero acknowledgment of the tough day you’ve had. Frustration sets in. You start wondering, Am I asking for too much, or do they just not care?

Sound familiar? Moments like these are all too common in relationships. We build expectations, sometimes without even realising it, and when reality doesn’t match up, frustration and resentment can easily creep in. The truth is, managing these expectations and learning to handle the inevitable disappointments is crucial to maintaining a healthy, lasting connection

In any relationship, whether dating or married, managing expectations and dealing with disappointment is key to maintaining a healthy, lasting bond.

When two people come together, they bring their unique backgrounds, values, and visions of what the relationship should look like. However, when these expectations aren’t communicated clearly or met, disappointment can quickly set in, leading to tension and strain.

Understanding Disappointment in Relationships

Disappointment is an inevitable part of any relationship. It often arises when expectations or desires aren’t met—whether it’s due to unfulfilled hopes, broken promises, or differing values and priorities. While these moments can be painful, they don’t have to spell the end of a relationship but can be an opportunity for growth and stronger emotional connections.

Disappointment in relationships can refer to the emotional distress or dissatisfaction experienced when one’s expectations and desires in a romantic or interpersonal partnership are unmet. It’s important to recognise that disappointment isn’t always a negative thing. When handled properly, it can pave the way for honest conversations.

Where Expectations Come From

Expectations often stem from our upbringing, past experiences, and personal desires. In a relationship, these expectations can range from emotional support, communication styles, roles within the partnership, and how love is expressed. It’s essential to recognise that while expectations are natural, they can also be unrealistic or unspoken, leading to misunderstandings and disappointment.

In marriages, couples might have expectations about shared responsibilities, financial contributions, or intimacy levels, and if these expectations are not met, it may create feelings of resentment or dissatisfaction. Therefore, understanding and clarifying these expectations from the start is crucial.
