Tinubu Govt Blasts Israel Over Qatar Airstrike

The Bola Tinubu-led government has strongly condemned reports of an Israeli airstrike in Doha, Qatar, on September 9, 2025.
The attack, which allegedly targeted senior Hamas leaders, has raised fresh concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East.
In a statement issued late Wednesday by Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, Nigeria expressed “utmost concern” over the development.
The government called for strict adherence to international law and respect for national sovereignty, warning that cross-border use of force threatens regional stability.
“Nigeria underscores the primacy of respecting the sovereignty of all nations and adhering to international law, particularly in matters involving the use of force across borders.
This development raises serious questions about regional stability and the prospects for ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” the statement read.
The Tinubu government also praised Qatar for its longstanding role in fostering dialogue and mediation in the conflict.
It urged all sides to exercise maximum restraint, avoid further escalation, and recommit to peaceful negotiations.
Nigeria extended sympathies to those affected by the strike and pledged continued support for initiatives that promote dialogue and de-escalation.
The government emphasized its commitment to peace and security in the Middle East through the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.
This statement comes amid intensifying violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The war reignited in October 2023 after Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing over 1,200 people and taking more than 200 hostages.
Israel responded with a prolonged military campaign in Gaza, which has since caused massive destruction and a worsening humanitarian crisis.
Figures from the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza report that more than 62,000 people have been killed in the nearly two years of bombardment.
Qatar remains central to mediation efforts, hosting Hamas’ political leadership and serving as a hub for negotiations.
The latest airstrike in its capital has cast doubt on the viability of ongoing diplomatic channels, sparking fears of a broader regional escalation.
Nigeria’s warning to Israel underscores its growing role in international diplomacy.
In July, Abuja also cautioned against Israel’s military strikes on Iran, offering to support de-escalation efforts.
The Tinubu government’s latest statement highlights Abuja’s stance on upholding sovereignty, promoting dialogue, and rejecting military escalation in volatile regions.
