The European Union has launched a major retaliatory move against United States President Donald Trump’s tariffs by imposing duties on American exports valued at €21 billion ($23.2 billion).
Affected goods include soybeans, motorcycles, beauty products, and various agricultural and industrial items.
Announced by the European Commission on Wednesday, April 9, the action gained near-unanimous backing from EU member states—Hungary being the only dissenting vote.
The new tariffs will be enforced beginning April 15.
The Commission stated the measures are reversible if the U.S. agrees to a fair and balanced trade settlement, though Brussels maintains that the original U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium were unjustified and economically harmful.
This response unfolds in two stages:
Reintroduction of suspended Trump-era tariffs, effective next Tuesday.
A broader tariff list targeting more U.S. goods, mostly starting next month, with some delayed until December.
The new list includes poultry, rice, nuts, textiles, vehicles, and more—many from Republican-leaning states, suggesting a strategic selection.
Further retaliation could be announced next week if the U.S. expands its tariff actions.
Brussels reaffirmed openness to negotiations but vowed to defend European interests until a balanced agreement is reached.
