# In her effort to make the people in the council area self- reliant and employers of labour, the Mayor of idemili South local government area, Dr. Mrs Amaka Obi, has empowered 700 women and youths from different communities in idemili south with skills and startup equipment.
Speaking during the graduation of the beneficiaries held at the council secretariat, Ojoto, Dr. Obi pointed out that the objective of the empowerment programme is to train women and youths in various skills and vocations for the purpose of economic empowerment and lifting their status from the state of dependency to self-reliance.
The Mayor maintained that the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has taken women and youths empowerment as one of its focal policies in order to mitigate the effects of poverty prevalent amongst them, stating that when women are economically empowered, there is less tension in the home front and obvious reduction in domestic violence.
On her part, the First Lady of Anambra State, Dr. Mrs Nonye Soludo appreciated Mrs Amaka Obi for empowering Idemili South women and youths. She enjoined the beneficiaries to maximise the opportunity.
# Labour Party lawmakers from Anambra State serving in the National Assembly have raised alarm over fears that Governor Chukwuma Soludo may deploy non-state security personnel and touts in Saturday’s by-elections in the state.
By-elections will be held in Anambra to replace slain lawmakers from the state, both in Onitsha North 1 State Constituency for the House of Assembly and Anambra South senatorial zone for the National Assembly.
The lawmakers, under the aegis of the Anambra State Labour Party caucus in the National Assembly, in a statement issued in Awka, called on the nation’s security chiefs to assist the Nigerian Police in providing a serene atmosphere for the citizenry to vote in the elections without fear of molestation.
The statement, signed by all members of the caucus comprising two senators and six House of Representatives members, said the information at their disposal suggests that Soludo and his All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) have concluded plans to deploy men of the state’s security outfit, Udogachi, crude revenue enforcers, popularly known as ndi Aka odo, and sundry non-state actors to take over the various voting points for the by-elections.
# AIG Godwin Eze, who was deployed as the Supervisory Officer for the forthcoming Anambra Bye-elections slated for Saturday 16th August 2025, assumes duty.
The AIG in his address emphasised that only duly accredited security personnel will be permitted to participate in election duties.
Consequently, all vigilante operatives, hunters, and other quasi-security outfits are strictly prohibited from any form of engagement during the exercise.
“Furthermore, to ensure a safe and hitch-free election, there shall be restrictions on vehicular movement from 6am to 6pm in the affected areas throughout the election period”. The police boss remarked.
# The State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) Anambra State Command, Commandant Maku Olatunde has ordered the massive deployment of NSCDC personnel and all available operational assets for security coverage ahead of Bye-Elections in Anambra State scheduled to hold on Saturday 16th August, 2025.
Commandant Maku gave the directive during his last minute operational readiness assessment of officers and men at the State Command Headquarters Awka on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
The NSCDC State helmsman said the command in line with its core mandate is determined to protect all critical, national and state and local government assets and infrastructure, including INEC facilities in and around the state.
He reassured members of the public of adequate security for the bye-election, saying that the command in collaboration with other sister security agencies would dominate the public space , ensure visibility of operatives and embark on confidence-building patrol before, during and after the election.
# Police Operatives attached the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu, acting on credible intelligence, recovered an abandoned fabricated AK-47 rifle, one magazine without ammunition in an apartment at Umuike Village, Awka.
This was in continuation of on-going investigations into a case of conspiracy, murder, and unlawful possession of firearms where two male victims were gruesomely murdered at Okochi Village, Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area.
Anambra Police Spokesperson, SP. Tochukwu Ikenga in a release made available to journalists, maintained that
the principal suspect, identified as Nwajagu (other names unknown), has been on the run since the incident and was traced to an apartment in Awka.
“Upon sighting the operatives, the suspect fled through the back door. The Command hereby assures that efforts are being intensified to apprehend and bring the fleeing suspect to justice. Meanwhile, the firearm has been recovered and taken into custody as an exhibit”. Ikenga stated.
# The attention of the Anambra State Government has been drawn to the statement being circulated by the Labour Party Caucus in the National Assembly regarding election security for the August 16 bye-elections in Anambra State, accusing Governor Chukwuma Soludo, of planning to unleash thugs on opposition parties.
Anambra Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor in a press release made available to journalists maintained that the accusations is an act of desperation.
Ndi Anambra, particularly those in the constituencies involved in the Saturday, August 16 bye-elections, are therefore advised to go out en masse to vote, keep the peace, and defend their votes.
# The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra State Command has engaged the participation of Traditional Rulers Council as advocate for safe road use.
This engagement was achieved through the investiture of His Majesty, Igwe Chukwudubem Iweka III, Eze Obosi, and Chairman of the Anambra State.
The traditional ruler was decorated as FRSC Honourary Special Marshal at a colourful ceremony at the Igwe’s Palace in Obosi.
In the keynote address, the Corps Marshal’s representative emphasized that the conferment was in recognition of the monarch’s exemplary leadership, dedication to the safety, peace, and well-being of his people, and his efforts in promoting road safety and preventing Road Traffic Crashes.
Igwe Iweka had taken his passion for road safety some degrees higher when, months back, he had invited the Sector Commander to address a forum of all Traditional Rulers Council in all the States of the South East.
At the investiture ceremony, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Chukwudubem Iweka III, expressed deep appreciation for the honor and pledged continued support for road safety initiatives within Obosi Kingdom, Anambra State, and Nigeria.
# The Youth Wing of the Anambra State Association of Town Unions, (ASATU), has directed the Caretaker President General of Abba Town Union, ATU, Mr. Alexander Ekwuagana, to organize an election for the youth wing of the town within one month, and to give the body a date for the exercise.
In a letter dated 8th August, 2025 and addressed to Mr. Ekwuagana, the youth body noted that the election is expected to be conducted not more than 30 days of receipt of the letter,
The letter signed by the President General of ASATU Youth Wing, Comrade Ken Okoli, was copied to the Member representing Njikoka Two Constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Jude Akpua, Mayor Njikoka LGA, Hon. Chinedu Ononiba, Traditional Ruler of Abba, Youth Leader of Abba and Community Role Model from Abba.
# As part of the build-up to the forthcoming bye-electionn in the State, massive deployment of personnel and operational assets is currently ongoing across identified flashpoints and other sensitive areas to ensure adequate security coverage before, during, and after the election.
The reinforcement is designed to strengthen the existing security architecture across the affected areas and ensure a hitch-free, peaceful, and credible electoral process.
The Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG Godwin Eze who is the Supervisory Officer in charge of the election, has assured residents of adequate security throughout the exercise.
He further urges Ndi Anambra to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security personnel, and to freely exercise their civic responsibility without fear or intimidation.
The Command reiterates its unwavering commitment to neutrality, professionalism, and the protection of lives and property during the exercise.
