# Anambra State Commissioner of Information, Dr. Law Mefor has called on media practitioners to keep in view professional ethics in dispensation of duties.

Chief Mefor made the call while speaking recently in workshop on Social Media Issues at Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) Auditorium, Awka.

The Commissioner enjoined journalists to jettison the fear that artificial intelligence (AI) will take away their job through citizen journalism but embrace AI, to sieving out quacks in the profession.

“Propaganda is not part of proper information dissemination especially in state like ours where good governance is speaking volume.

“Governor Chukwuma Soludo has done more than enough to be pleaded with to continue in office. We need not to tell lies or make empty praises to prove this but showcase what he has done, doing and pointing at to do.

“Good deed does not hide itself. Those of us in opposition are living witness to Soludo’s doggedness to closing infrastructure deficit gap. So, report roads that have been done, those being done and those to be done in a verifiable manner.”

“It is irritating to hear that information officer does not have social media handles such as Instagram, X, Facebook, among others. You need these platforms to getting informed so as to inform.”. Mefor stated.

# The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council, is set to conclude its annual press week with a grand ceremony on Thursday, August 28, 2025, where it will honour several distinguished individuals.

The event, which marks the climax of the weeklong activities that began on August 7, will see Architect Okechukwu Ezeobi receive the prestigious 2025 NUJ Man of the Year Award.

Architect Ezeobi, the General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Anambra State Bureau of Public Procurement, is a renowned humanist and philanthropist. He will be following in the footsteps of past recipients, including Dr. Anthony Chinedu Umeadi (2024), HRM Igwe Alex Onyido (2023), and Dame Dr. Adaora Umeoji (2022).

# Anambra State House of Assembly on Tuesday at plenary, suspended the lawmaker representing Ayamelum Constituency, Hon. Bernard Udemezue
for three months without pay.

The House directed Udemezue, to tender a public apology to the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, and members of the 8th Assembly over what was described as unparliamentary actions capable of denting the image of the Legislature.

The directive followed recommendations from the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics, and Privileges, which investigated allegations leveled against the lawmaker, for his unparliamentary conduct which could be reviewed.

According to the resolutions, Hon. Udemezue must issue the apology within five working days through his official social media platforms.

On the grave allegations linking the Anambra State Government to the kidnap and subsequent murder of late Hon. Justice Azuka, as well as alleged impeachment plot, the Assembly urged the Commissioner of Police and the Director of the Department of State Security Service to immediately commence investigations, noting that Hon. Udemezue may have vital information to assist security agencies in unraveling the matter.

The resolution, stated that the Ayamelum lawmaker is to undergo special training sessions and workshops on parliamentary ethics, practices and duties, while members were also cautioned to strictly adhere to the Standing Orders of the House and conduct themselves properly, especially in public places.

# The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council will on Thursday August 28 celebrate several other personalities for their contributions to society. They include: Princess Dr. Jessie Ifeoma Udoka, Founder and CEO of Queentovah Helping Services and Queentovah Cares Foundation, will be named the 2025 NUJ Anambra Philanthropist of the 21st Century.

Hon. Ikechukwu Okafor, CEO of Prince Iyke Construction Company, will receive the NUJ Anambra Most Inspiring Youth Leader Award, 2025.

Hon. Dr. ThankGod Chibuike Anago, Mayor of Awka North LGA, will be honored as the NUJ Anambra Most Outstanding Mayor of the Year, 2025.

Dr. Nelson Obinna Omenugha, Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Empowerment, will receive the Most Outstanding Youth Leader of the Year Award.

High Chief Emenike Anthony Nwakaeze, former President-General of Awba Ofemili Town Union, will be decorated with the 2025 Outstanding Community Service Award.

# The Managing Director, Anambra State Broadcasting Service, Awka, Mr. Christopher Molokwu has charged information officers to manage bad press properly, emphasizing that it is not about what is said but about how it is said. Worst case news scenarios are subject to reportage. How it is reported is what matters.

“Governor Soludo may not get it right at every point, yet if everything you see is ugly, the chances of changing an ugly scenario will be difficult. It is better to point at good things done to be in better position to advocate changes to the ugly.”
Molokwu remarked.

Other Resource Persons like Joseph Egbocha, Uchechukwu Ebonam, Obi Umunnakwe, Esther Ndife agreed to the aforementioned points but added that in the information industry, we write to express not to impress.

They enjoined information officers to chose English words that are familiar to people, so as to enable them to read and understand.

# The Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze has eulogized the founding fathers of the State both dead and alive for their vision and efforts towards creation of the State, as well as the Governors who have recorded meaningful developments in their various tenures.

In his Goodwill Message to the government and people of Anambra State as they celebrate 34 years of creation of the State, Rt. Hon. Udeze firmly stated that though the previous governments tried greatly in developing the State, the present Soludo administration is outstanding in view of the unprecedented milestones Governor Chukwuma Soludo has accomplished in all sectors of the State economy in just three years, adding that presently, Anambra State ranks very high among other States in the country especially in economic and industrial revolution.

The Speaker who highlighted massive road infrastructure, improved health care system, employment opportunities, improved security architecture, youth empowerment, free education, agricultural revolution and improved environmental and urban regeneration among others as some of the gains of the Soludo administration, praised him highly for being the first Governor since the creation of the State in 1991 to build a world class Government House and Lodge befitting of a grade one State like Anambra.

# The Inclusive Mobilization for Participation, Advocacy, and Civic Transformation (IMPACT) Project has set an ambitious goal of raising voter turnout in Anambra and Imo States to at least 25% in the next electoral cycle, up from Anambra’s historic low of 10% in the 2021 governorship election.

Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the project is being implemented by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room in partnership with the Social and Integral Development Centre (SIDEC). It seeks to increase the civic and political participation of women, youth, and persons with disabilities (PWDs), while tackling structural exclusion, voter apathy, and disinformation.

SIDEC’s Executive Director, Mrs. Ugochi Ehiahuruike while speaking at the onboarding in Awka, explained that the initiative builds on her organization’s inclusive governance work across Anambra’s 158 structured markets, where women and youth dominate as traders and apprentices but remain underrepresented in leadership.

Ehiahuruike said Project IMPACT will institutionalize democratic elections for women and PWDs in 15 key markets—five per zone—ending a history of symbolic appointments.

 

# Drivers within the employ of Nnamdi Azikiwe University UNIZIK, Awka are now to rise beyond Grade Level 11 to Level 13.

The Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Carol Arinze-Umobi, announced the new career progression pathway at the inauguration of the Board of the Chisco Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain Management.

The occasion also marked the commencement of a proficiency training programme for the institution’s drivers.

Prof. Arinze-Umobi commended Chief Chidi Anyaegbu, founder of Chisco Group, for his generosity and vision, describing the development as “historic” and pledging that the university would maximize the opportunities provided by the institute.

The Director of the Institute, Tochukwu Onyeyili, In his address, described the inauguration as a major leap forward for both the university and Nigeria’s logistics and supply chain sector.

# The Nigeria Union of Journalists Anambra State Council will on Thursday August 28 celebrate winners of the NUJ indoor games together while the club that won the Novelty Match will equally receive special handshake and trophies at the occasion.

The 2025 Winner of Professor Chinyere Stella Okunna award for ethical journalism will equally receive N150,000; while the 2nd and third runner-up will go home with N50,000 and N30,000, respectively.

The award ceremony will take place at the International Convention Centre (ICC) in Awka, starting at 10 a.m. The event will be chaired by Chief Primus Odili, while the Governor’s wife and founder of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, Dr. Nonye Soludo, will deliver a keynote speech.

The event’s theme is “The Media and Our State Anambra: Reportage in Election Year,” and the guest speaker will be Professor Angela Nkiru Nwammuo, Chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, Anambra State Chapter.

The Chief Host and NUJ National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya, along with other national and zonal leaders, will welcome the guest of honor, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo.
