# Scholars in education, literature and traditional institution recently gathered in Awka to mark the fifth memorial lecture in honour of His Majesty Eze Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike, ac renowned novelist, administrator and traditional ruler of Ndikelionwu, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The memorial event was organised by the Nigerian Book Foundation (NBF) in collaboration with the Anambra State Ministry of Education, the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Anambra State Chapter and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council.

Delivering her address, the Commissioner for Education Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, described Prof. Ike as a literary icon who used his works to safeguard traditional Igbo values. She particularly commended his novel Expo 77 for its satirical exposure of corruption in Nigeria education sector. She noted that Ike was among the few who boldly documented the experiences of the Igbo during the Nigerian civil war.

# The Anambra State Police Command has recovered one automatic pump action and has five suspects in custody.

The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation over the murder of two persons and grievous harm to another in an alleged land dispute at Okochi – Ime Village, Okpuno, Awka South Local Government Area.

The disturbing incident revealed that the armed suspects with pump action guns and operating in an unmarked black Toyota Corolla car attacked the victims and fled the scene.

The bodies of the victims have been recovered and deposited at the morgue while the other is in the hospital receiving treatment.

The Commissioner of Police has ordered the immediate transfer of the Case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka for a comprehensive investigation. He has further directed the emplacement of necessary measures to arrest other fleeing suspects.

# The Deputy Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Jude Akpua and the Chairman of Njikoka
Local Government Area, Bar. Chinedu Ononiba alongside other stakeholders have welcomed Mr. Ugochukwu Oraefo to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Akpua who is the lawmaker representing Njikoka two Constituency, while speaking at the event held in Abba Ward 2, emphasized the inclusive nature of APGA and its commitment to grassroots development.

In his address, the Mayor of Njikoka LGA,
Barr. Chinedu Ononiba commended Oraefo for his decision, highlighting APGA’s reputation as the first registered political party in Nigeria and the leading party in Anambra State.

Hon. Ononiba attributed the party’s success to the outstanding leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, whose transformative governance continues to inspire confidence among the populace.

# Chairman of the NUJ Anambra State Council, Comrade Emeka Odogwu has expressed concern over the dwindling reading culture among students in the digital age.

Speaking in Awka, Odogwu urged young people to return to printed books, stating that reading hard copies helps with comprehension and critical thinking.

# Prof. Chike Okoye, a professor of Poetry and Post-Colonial Literature at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka has described Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike, as “a colossus and a custodian of culture.”

Speaking at the fifth memorial lecture in honour of His Majesty Eze Prof. Chukwuemeka Ike, Okoye highlighted the late author role in teaching creative writing at the University of Jos and praised his numerous novels, including Sunset at Dawn, Toads for Supper, The Naked Gods, and The Chicken Chasers, for their deep societal relevance.

# The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) says the current tariff is a fallout from the concept of Service Based Tariff (SBT) which was introduced by Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in 2020 as part of measures to ensure that distribution companies deliver efficient services to customers.

Mr. Emeka Ezeh, Head Corporate Communications of EEDC told journalists in Awka on Thursday that the introduction of SBT gave rise to the various service bands (Bands A, B, C, D and E) with their respective minimum hours of availability to ensure customers got value for the service they paid for.

EEDC appealed to customers within its network to bear with the company as the Band-A tariff was not the making of distribution companies but a regulatory issue

He said the Federal Government’s decision to remove electricity subsidy from the tariff paid by Band “A” customers made them pay more for electricity.

# Police Operatives attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) acting on credible information of an arrested kidnap suspect, one Ebuka Orizu male aged 26 years, currently in custody, led to the recovery of one locally made beretta pistol, eleven live cartridges and two laptops in Oba, Idemili South Local Government Area.

According to SP. Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, further information revealed that the suspect is a member of a criminal gang operating in Oraifite and its environs. Meanwhile, efforts are already emplaced to arrest other gang members currently at large.

Somtochukwu Udeze, while declaring the hearing open, said the bill, when passed, would help to prevent abuse, promote transparency, and preserve a key cultural and economic practice in Igbo society.

The lawmaker representing Anaocha two Constituency, Hon. Ejike Okechukwu who was the sponsor of the bill explained that it also seeks to discourage exploitation by ensuring that all contractual agreements are clearly defined, with written agreements spelling out duties, duration, and conditions for settlement at the end of the apprenticeship.

# # Governor Chukwuma Soludo has called on the Federal Government to adopt a new and more sustainable approach to flood management in Nigeria, for a permanent solution to the recurring flood disasters that affect Anambra and other states annually.

Soludo made the call through his Deputy, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, during a courtesy visit by officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) at the State’s Light House in Awka, ahead of a sensitization tour of flood-prone communities by the NEMA delegates.

Soludo, while appreciating the federal agency’s visit, noted that the Anambra State government has already taken proactive measures to mitigate the anticipated impact of this year’s floods, listing the ongoing efforts to include readiness of holding centers, continued sensitization campaigns in riverine council areas, and real-time monitoring of water levels using a digital flood-monitoring device recently donated by the Japanese government.
