* The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has won the 2025 best crime fighter man of the year award.
The award was presented to Orutugu by Pechilly Investigative Limited, at the Police Headquarters Amawbia-Awka on Monday May 5th 2025.
Speaking after receiving the award, the CP in his appreciation, dedicated the award to the Police Command and other sister agencies’s dedication to serve the people of Anambra State.
The Police boss acknowledged that criminal activities, especially, the sit-at-home order have reduced to the barest minimum under his watch within three months of his assumption in the state.
Speaking after presenting the award, the Chief Executive Officer of Pechilly Investigative Limited, Amb. Karen James, said the recognition is to encouraged and commend the CP for his remarkable efforts in curtailing sit-at-home order, kidnapping, cultism, armed robbering and for maintaining law and order other crime in the state within a space of three months in office.
According to James, CP Ikioye Orutugu, defeated other Security Chiefs in the state to emerged the winner after a comprehensive online voting process by security assessment experts across Nigeria.
* The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, has inaugurated and trained selected individuals as the Technical Working Groups (TWGs) on alternate care for children in the state.
The training that took place at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Center Awka was in partnership with SOS Children’s Villages Nigeria and Child Protection Network Nigeria.
Speaking while inaugurating the group, the Commissioner urged them to take the task at hand seriously and come out with better guidelines for the alternative care of children as that has been posing a big challenge in the state.
* The Mayor of Awka South LGA, Prince Chinedu Okafor says the efforts of Governor Chukwuma Soludo towards the transformation of Awka into livable, green and prosperous Capital city needs to be commended and rewarded.
Speaking in an interview in Awka, Prince Okafor affirmed that the new Government House and Lodge, the Solution Fun City put in place in Awka among other infrastructural developments by Governor Soludo has improved the landscape of Awka and called on ndi Anambra to continue with their support and prayers to his administration.
The Mayor urged the people of Anambra State to always make environmental sanitation a daily routine and cautioned the citizenry against dumping refuse in unauthorized places, reminding them of the need to protect government’s facilities against vandalism.
* The Wife of Anambra State Governor Dr. Mrs. Nonye Soludo has flagged off the distribution of educational materials to schools.
The distribution was done through the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, ASUBEB, in collaboration with Universal Basic Education Board, UBEC.
During the flag-off, Mrs. Soludo said education remains a topic that can never be separated from human development noting that the distribution of the educational materials buttresses an important ideology that drives Anambra State
The Governor’s wife maintained that education is the bedrock of human development and that the distribution of educational materials is to consolidate on existing policy for a stronger and efficient education sector.
* Anambra Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Oruttreehas called on Stakeholders and Community leaders of Idemili North to assist with information to unravel the perpetrators of the suspected murder of a pregnant lady found hanging on a cashew tree along Uke/Ideani road.
The CP described the incident as unfortunate and a stark example of “man’s inhumanity to man and ordered a thorough investigation into the incident to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
To this end, the Command calls on members of the public to help identify the deceased, as Police Operatives from Ogidi Police Division have recovered the body and deposited it in the mortuary.
* The Director, Sahelian Institute for Bamboo Research, Entrepreneurship Development, (SIBRED), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Dr. John Ogbodo, wants the government and people of Anambra State to promote the cultivation of bamboo to mitigate climate change impacts.
Ogbodo made the call during a Green Sustainability Forum organized by the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN) as part of the National Green Campaign.
Speaking on the topic, “Climate Resilient Bamboo Based Farming Systems for Net Zero Achievement in Anambra Communities”, SIBRED Director said bamboo also offers other benefits such as windbreaks and boundary markers.
Consequently, he urged the Anambra State Government to promote and champion its cultivation across the state, especially at riverbank and flood- and erosion-prone areas.
* Farmers in Anambra State have called on government at all levels to provide robust support to farmers this farming season as a solution to the ongoing food scarcity ravaging Nigeria.
Speaking to newsmen Awka, some of the farmers, including Mr. Alfred Nkemdilim from Okpuno in Awka South Local Government Area, and Mrs. Nkechi Ozua from Amanuke in Awka North Council Area, emphasized the need for increased assistance for farmers, advocating for more financial support, improved access to quality seedlings, and enhanced security in farming communities and farm lands, to encourage large-scale cultivation.
Also speaking, the President General of Urum community in Awka North Local Government Area, Sir. Felix Oranye, while commending the Anambra State Government for its support to farmers, appealed for timely distribution of seedlings and financial aid to farmers, calling for the construction of more access roads to major farming areas to ease transportation and evacuation of farm produce.
* Anambra Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu has continued to open more channels of Policing engagement as he received a human rights group in his Office at the State Headquarters, Awka.
During the interaction, the CP commended the group and showed interest on a complaint about a widow who was physically brutalised and assaulted in Amanuke by her brother-in-law.
Preliminary information alleged that the suspect in order to shield his crime threatened the victim not to report to the police and that she would pay the fine of One hundred thousand Naira, only if she does.
The CP while directing the Police Public Relations Officer to investigate the incident, expressed willingness to pay the fine, but must ensure that justice is served.
In their response, the leader of the Human Rights group, Mr Charles Ejefonye thanked the CP for receiving them and presented a book as a gesture of appreciation for his commitment to human rights, community engagement, upholding the law and protecting the rights of citizens, particularly vulnerable individuals in the State.
* The Executive Chairman, Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board, (ASUBEB), Dr Vera Nwadinobi, said the educational materials distributed were supplied by the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEC), Abuja and Anambra State government and to be distributed to primary and Junior secondary schools saying that the resources represent a significant investment in the future of the educational development of Anambra youths.
Dr Nwadinobi while speaking during the flag-off, pointed out that the gesture is part of the gains of the reformed relationship Anambra has with UBEC unlike what was obtainable before the present administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo and mentioned the numerous other investment the administration has carried out in the education sector of the state.
