Ukraine struck Russian command post in Kherson Oblast, stronghold in Kursk Oblast

Ukrainian forces launched targeted strikes on March 5, hitting a Russian command post in the occupied town of Oleshky, Kherson Oblast, as well as a fortified position in Russia’s Kursk Oblast, the Ukrainian military announced on March 7.
According to reports from The Kyiv Independent, the strikes coincided with the U.S. decision to halt intelligence-sharing with Ukraine, a move that could impact Kyiv’s ability to conduct precise military operations. However, the statement from Ukraine’s General Staff did not clarify whether the attacks were carried out before or after the intelligence-sharing suspension.
One of the primary targets was a command post belonging to the 17th Tank Regiment of the 70th Motorized Rifle Division, which is stationed in Russian-occupied Kherson Oblast. Russia has controlled this area since its forces were forced to retreat from the western part of the region following Ukraine’s counteroffensive in the fall of 2022. Despite losing ground west of the Dnipro River, Russian troops continue to maintain a strong presence on the eastern bank.
Additionally, Ukrainian forces struck a fortified position belonging to the 2nd company of Russia’s 177th Separate Naval Infantry Regiment in Plekhovo, a settlement in Kursk Oblast.
Since August 2024, Ukraine has intensified military actions in Russian border regions, aiming to weaken Moscow’s ability to advance in the Donbas region. These incursions are designed to stretch Russian forces and disrupt their strategic planning.
The General Staff emphasized that these precision strikes are part of a broader effort to erode Russia’s military capabilities and reclaim occupied Ukrainian territory.
“These strikes are part of an ongoing campaign to weaken the Russian Armed Forces as Ukraine continues its struggle for liberation,” the military statement read.
Ukraine’s Air Force reaffirmed its readiness to conduct further operations to degrade Russia’s military strength, underscoring the country’s commitment to defending its sovereignty.
