Venezuela halts flights from Colombia after foiling terror plot

Venezuelan authorities have suspended all flights from Colombia following the arrest of 38 individuals accused of plotting terrorism.

Diosdado Cabello announced the arrests and flight ban during a televised press conference with local media on Monday.

Cabello stated the suspects included bomb makers, migrant smugglers, and hired mercenaries returning to Venezuela with explosives.

Authorities reportedly uncovered an alleged conspiracy aimed at destabilizing the country ahead of upcoming elections.

Cabello confirmed that explosive devices were seized from the suspects upon their arrival on Venezuelan soil.

He said the individuals formed part of a “new plot of conspiracy and terrorism” aimed at undermining national security.

The flight ban took immediate effect and applies to all inbound air travel from Colombia to Venezuela.

Venezuela’s National Institute of Civil Aviation (INAC) later confirmed the suspension will last until May 26 at 6 p.m. local time.

Officials said the action was necessary to ensure electoral safety and public order during the voting period.

Venezuelan voters are scheduled to participate in legislative and gubernatorial elections on Sunday, May 26.
