The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has opened over the arrest of social media activist, Martins Vincent Otse, aka, the Verydarkman.
In a statement on Tuesday, the anti-graft agency stated that Otse was taken into custody over several petitions lodged against him.
According to the commission, Otse repeatedly ignored multiple invitations sent to him through his known addresses and communication channels, prompting the agency to take necessary steps to ensure his compliance.
“The petitions pertain to grave allegations of financial malfeasance which cannot be ignored by the Commission,” the statement reads.
The EFCC also acknowledged it was aware of what it described as “several unguarded attacks” by Otse against its operations but insisted that his arrest was unrelated to those remarks.
It noted that while such conduct is condemnable, a separate law enforcement body would handle that matter.
The Commission reiterated that it acted within the law by detaining Otse, having secured the necessary remand order to keep him in custody while investigations continue.
“The EFCC has a lawful right to hold Otse in custody like any other suspect being investigated by the Commission. The appropriate Remand Order was obtained in this regard,” it stated.
However, the agency disclosed that Otse has been granted administrative bail and would be released once he meets the bail conditions.
While appreciating the public’s interest in the matter, the EFCC urged Nigerians to avoid speculating about its motives and allow the agency to carry out its constitutional duties without interference.
“The passion, enthusiasm and torrential reactions to all of its activities are welcome. However, insinuations about its motive in carrying out its assignment should no longer continue.”
“The EFCC should be allowed to do its job without fear or favour. As soon as investigations are concluded, charges will be filed,” the Commission assured.
