What I told my former classmates who refused to date me because I was poor – Amaechi

Former Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, has shared what he told his former female classmates who declined to date him during their school years due to his poor background.
While speaking with Daily Sun, Amaechi opened up about the difficult circumstances of his early life, recalling how he and his family often struggled to afford even basic necessities.
According to him, they couldn’t afford three square meals, and clothing was also a major challenge.

The former governor of Rivers State mentioned that he wore the same shirt and trousers for nearly four years—something many find hard to believe when he shares it.
Reflecting on his school reunion, Amaechi said he often teases the women who once turned him down.
“At our reunions in Umuahia, I usually joke with my classmates. I’d tell them, ‘See, one of you could have been Mrs. Amaechi by now if only you had agreed back then in school.’”
He continued: “We were very poor. We couldn’t afford food, we didn’t have clothes to wear, and because of that, you didn’t pay attention to us. You didn’t see any potential in us. But what many don’t understand is that men strive to be relevant. For me, I’ve remained as simple as life allows.”
