Why Davido Paid Tribute to Sound Sultan in ‘10 Kilo’ Visuals

Afrobeats star Davido has honoured the memory of late Nigerian music icon Sound Sultan in the music video for 10 Kilo, a track from his latest project, 5ive. The tribute features a thoughtful image of Sound Sultan placed in the background, serving as a subtle yet powerful nod to the late singer’s enduring influence.
The gesture resonates deeply with themes Sound Sultan championed more than a decade ago — love, acceptance, and the celebration of diverse beauty standards.
In 2013, Sound Sultan released Orobo, a song that joyfully embraced fuller-figured women, challenging mainstream Nigerian beauty ideals of the time. The track was widely praised as an unapologetic celebration of body positivity, years before the conversation gained broader global traction.
Davido’s visual homage in 10 Kilo appears to extend that same message, weaving it into contemporary Afrobeats culture while recognising Sound Sultan’s legacy as a socially conscious artist.
The late singer, whose real name was Olanrewaju Fasasi, passed away in July 2021 after a battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. His music, known for blending entertainment with advocacy, continues to inspire a new generation of Nigerian artists.
By integrating Sound Sultan’s image into 10 Kilo, Davido not only memorialises a respected figure in the industry but also reinforces the timelessness of his message.
