Why I Unblocked Lawyer Festus on X – Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has unblocked human rights lawyer, Festus Ogun, on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), days after the lawyer dragged him to court for the alleged violation of his rights.

The governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gboyega Akosile, confirmed the move in a post on his official X handle on Saturday.

Akosile described the governor’s action as a demonstration of leadership and openness to constructive engagement with citizens.

“Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has again displayed leadership by inviting a citizen that sued him over the alleged blocking on X,” Akosile wrote.

He stressed that Sanwo-Olu views every Lagos resident as his citizen and prioritizes direct communication with the people.

Akosile also praised Ogun for showing what he called “maturity and understanding” in agreeing to resolve the matter amicably.

“Thanks to my friend, Festus Ogun, for equally showing some high-level maturity and understanding, and willingness to continue to engage constructively for the development of our dear state. Governance is a collective responsibility,” he added.

On his part, Festus Ogun confirmed that Sanwo-Olu had indeed unblocked him. The lawyer revealed that he was invited to Lagos House, Marina, on Friday, where he met briefly with the governor.

According to him, the meeting helped resolve his complaint over the alleged human rights violation.

“Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unblocked me on X.

I met briefly with him yesterday at Lagos House Marina, on his invitation, to amicably resolve my complaint of human rights violations,” Ogun stated in his own X post.

The lawyer, known for his activism, commended the governor for choosing dialogue over litigation.

“An average Nigerian governor would have lined up an array of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) to defend my lawsuit.

However, Governor Sanwo-Olu, where I live and work as a legal practitioner, has toed the honourable and commendable path of unblocking me. Aluta continua,” he wrote.

Ogun further explained that the governor took time to clarify the circumstances that led to his blocking on the platform, noting that such openness was rare among political leaders.

The move has sparked discussions online, with some commentators applauding the governor’s maturity, while others insisted that the lawsuit itself showed how far Nigeria still has to go in strengthening citizens’ rights and digital freedom.
