Zenith Women’s Super 8 set to light up Lagos

The stage is set for another thrilling chapter in Nigerian basketball as the 2025 Zenith Women’s Basketball Super 8 tips off Tuesday, September 16, at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos. Eight of the nation’s finest women’s clubs will go head-to-head in a week-long battle for supremacy and the coveted national crown.
Drawn from the Atlantic and Savannah Conferences, the contenders include heavyweights like Bayelsa Whales, Dolphins, Warriors, and The Titans, among others—each bringing momentum, pride, and an eye on history into the Lagos showdown.
Chairperson of the NBBF Zenith Women’s Premier League, Perpetua Clement, assured fans of a hitch-free tournament while highlighting the steady rise in the quality of the domestic game.
“This season’s Premier League has been one of the most competitive we’ve seen. With the Final Eight approaching, we expect an even greater display of grit, strategy, and sportsmanship,” Clement said in Lagos.
She pointed out that Nigerian basketball is gaining global recognition, with D’Tigress dominating Africa and Nigerian-born stars thriving in Europe and the United States. For her, this should inspire local talents to keep closing the gap.
“While there are still some gaps, our local players are beginning to match the intensity and skill of their counterparts abroad. With consistent training, exposure, and mentorship, I believe they will soon hold their own against the best anywhere in the world,” she added.
The Super 8, bankrolled by Zenith Bank, has become the flagship platform for women’s basketball in Nigeria, consistently unearthing new stars and pushing grassroots players to national and international stages.
Clement credited NBBF President, Engr. Musa Kida, for steering the league with competitive structures that allow women’s basketball to flourish, while also commending the role of corporate sponsors in sustaining the sport.
For fans, the Lagos showdown promises electrifying moments—three-point shootouts, fast breaks, tactical battles, and raw athleticism. Beyond the fight for the trophy, clubs will also be staking their claim as true drivers of the women’s game in Nigeria.
With the countdown over, anticipation has reached fever pitch. As Clement summed it up: “The Super 8 will be a celebration of talent, passion, and ambition, proving once again that Nigerian women’s basketball is on a steady rise.”
